1.1 Background of the Study
Community-based events serve as a catalyst for tourism development, offering unique cultural experiences that attract visitors and stimulate local economies. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, events such as cultural festivals, traditional ceremonies, and local fairs showcase the region's rich heritage and natural attractions. Tourism development driven by community-based events not only enhances economic growth but also fosters cultural preservation and community pride. Studies by Eze and Mohammed (2024) highlight the potential of community events to position local areas as tourist destinations, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and promotion. However, the contribution of such events to tourism development in Lafia remains underexplored, particularly in terms of economic impact and sustainability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of community-based events to drive tourism development, Lafia LGA faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited marketing, and low stakeholder engagement. These issues hinder the ability of events to attract tourists and generate economic benefits. This study seeks to evaluate the contribution of community-based events to tourism development in Lafia, identifying opportunities for improvement.
